DPJ creates original soundtracks for classic and contemporary plays, book adaptations, musicals, and devised work.

Productions include Great Expectations (2015), The Maids (2017), and All My Sons (2019) for Dundee Rep; John Tiffany’s stage adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s book The Missing (2011) for the National Theatre of Scotland; and Right Now (2016), by French-Canadian playwright Catherine-Anne Toupin — directed by Michael Boyd and co-produced by Traverse Theatre (Edinburgh), Theatre Royal Bath, and the Bush Theatre (London).

DPJ has composed soundtracks for many visual storytelling productions with theatre maker Ramesh Meyyappan. His soundtrack to Love Beyond (2023) was awarded Best Music & Sound at the 2023 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland, later transferring to the 2025 Hong Kong Festival, with tours to Japan and South Korea scheduled for 2026. Their latest collaboration, Lear (Raw Material in association with National Theatre of Scotland, directed by Orla O’Loughlin), premiered at the 2025 Singapore International Festival.

A long-standing member of the Grid Iron creative team since 2003, DPJ has composed for many of their acclaimed site-specific and immersive productions, including Barflies (2009/2012), inspired by the writings of Charles Bukowski, and Muster Station: Leith (2022), a large-scale co-production with the Edinburgh International Festival, written and directed by Ben Harrison.

Soundtracks for theatre and dance productions for young audiences include works for Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Catherine Wheels, Starcatchers, Lyra, Scottish Youth Dance, and Curious Seed. He also works closely with artists with physical and learning disabilities; productions include the musical Castle Lennox (2023) — a Lung Ha / Royal Lyceum Edinburgh co-production.

International theatre credits include The Story of the Death of Najib Brax (2005) by Hisham Jaber, presented in Beirut by Grid Iron with artists from Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria; The Green Snake (2013) for the National Theatre of China at the Hong Kong Arts Festival; and Butterfly (2014) at the Esplanade, Singapore. Alongside long-term collaborator Ben Harrison, DPJ performed his reimagined 1980s soundtrack Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me (2024) at the 2025 Daejeon International Festival in South Korea.

Theatre awards include a Herald Angel for his children’s tone poem The Songbird (2010).

“its technical triumph lies in David Paul Jones’ music, Simon Wilkinson’s delicate lighting and Becky Minto’s design.”
